PROPOSED MISSION-ARANSAS NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE

Site Nomination Phase

After two years, the site nomination phase is now complete and has culminated with approval of the Site Nomination document by NOAA.

The first Site Selection Committee Workshop was held at UTMSI August 29, 2002.  About 120 people attended.  A presentation (0.8 mb) on the proposed program was given and attendees nominated 65 sites.

The Site Evaluation Subcommittee met during the Fall 2002 to compare nominations to selection criteria.  The Mission-Aransas Estuary provided the best fit to selection criteria.

The second Site Selection Committee Workshop was held January 23, 2003 at UTMSI to discuss results of the Site Evaluation Subcommittee process and to gather input on developing the Management Plan for the proposed MANERR.  About 99 people attended.  A presentation (1.5 mb) was given on the proposed site. The Committee voted (without objection) to propose the Mission-Aransas Estuary as the MANERR.

A public hearing to solicit comment on the proposed site was held June 11, 2003 in Rockport.  A presentation (0.9 mb) was given on the proposed site.  The Site Nomination document includes a transcript (0.2 mb) of the meeting in the appendices.

The final draft of the Site Nomination document and appendices can be downloaded from the links listed below.  The site was nominated by Governor Perry in March 2004 and approved by NOAA in September 2004.

The next phase is to prepare the combined Draft Environmental Impact Statement / Draft Management Plan (DEIS/DMP).
