Mission-Aransas NERR

Hyperspectral Imaging Project

The hyperspectral imaging project is a joint initiative with Mission-Aransas NERR and the NOAA Environmental Cooperative Science Center (ECSC). Hyperspectral imagery will be used to classify vegetation habitats and water characteristics. The flyover is expected to occur the week of July 14, 2008.

The principal thematic research objectives to date include flightlines and accompanying field surveys (ground-truthing) of:

  • SAV (primarily seagrass) and salt marsh habitats at Redfish Bay

  • Whooping crane marsh habitats of Aransas National Wildlife Refuge

  • A freshwater wetland complex (Fennessey Ranch)

  • Retrieval algorithms for water column constituents (esp chlorophyll, CDOM, and total suspended matter)

Hyperspectral Planning Meeting was held on March 31, 2008
